The galaxy derives its name from the archaic Millian word caladari, which meant "Galaxy of the Bright Stars", for the galaxy indeed is known for its brightness and luminosity. The Caladarian Galaxy is one of the billions of the galaxies that exist in the Universe, including the Milky Way, the Andromeda, the Teggedon Spiral, the Felix Galaxy, the Crones Galaxy, and the Calathrinan Galaxy. It has been the setting of the history of numerous civilizations, including (besides Laurasia itself), the Antediluvians, the Founders, the Cree Empire, the Shapeshifter Empire, the Pauline Empire, the Metasian Empire, the Millian Empire, the Arachosian Empire, the Lacian Khanate, the Great Dasian Empire, and numerous other galactic states and empires. The Caladarian Galaxy is a spiral galaxy 120,000 light years across, or about 37,000 parsecs (a parsec being 3.258 light years), and approximately five billion years old. A massive black hole exists at the center of the galaxy in the Central Core region. The Caladarian Galaxy has two satellite galaxies: the Angelina Spiral, which spans about 30,000 light years and consists of five billion stars and is located about 25,000 light-years to the west of the Galactic Disk, and the Great Tesmanian Cloud, located about 40,000 light-years to the north of the Galactic Disk and consists of one billion stars spread across 10,000 light years. A hyperspace disturbance also exists beyond the northern edge of the Great Tesmanian Cloud, preventing hyperspace routes north of the Cloud and impeding extra-galactic travel in that direction. The Galaxy contains nearly two hundred globular clusters. Although a hyperspace disturbance exists north of the Great Tesmanian Cloud, hyperspace makes it possible within the galaxy to have an enormous and diverse galactic civilization. There are approximately 400 billion stars, and 180 billion of these have planets that can support life. Ten percent of those planets developed life, while sentient life developed in 1,100 (20 million) of those. Factoring in output of heat and light for advanced civilizations to form, there are 7.1 billion truly habitable stars, and 3.2 billion habitable star systems, with only 69 million star systems throughout the galaxy bearing any native or colonized population. Of these, seven million star systems have populations in excess of one million, while 1.5 million star systems have populations in the tens of millions or higher. In total, the galaxy is populated by approximately 100 quadrillion different life forms.
