| - This Dark Druid is the de facto head of the Black Fang, the puppetmaster behind the scenes keeping all the other villains in line. About as enigmatic as they come, Nergal has grand ambitions to bind Dragons to his control, but to realize them, he needs vast amounts of "Quintessence," and to gain that, he intends to cause vast amounts of death and destruction. Striking up an alliance with the mad Lord Darin of Laus, and with the aid of his creations, the Morphs, he has set the stage for a war that will provide him with all the quintessence he needs.

Fairly generic Big Bad fare, right? If the player is willing to go hunting for some things off the beaten path, however, a new picture of the Dark Druid will come into focus, that of a tragic and deeply disturbed man who believes he is serving a greater purpose...
* Anticlimax Boss: By the time you've found a way around his Story-Breaker Power, you'll have a weapon capable of killing him in three hits. He is also killing you in three hits, though, so watch out!
* Archnemesis Dad: Maaaaaaaaybe...
* Beard of Evil
* Big Bad
* Cain and Abel: With Athos, in the "good friends" mode.
* Dark Is Evil
* The Dark Side Will Make You Forget
* Early-Bird Cameo: He doesn't actually appear, but is only just mentioned by a Black Fang agent in Chapter 7 (the Fang's first proper appearance), hinting at the larger story arc.
* Evil Counterpart: To Athos.
* Evil Sorcerer
* Face Heel Turn
* Good Scars, Evil Scars: Just look at the one left by Athos (who was, admittedly, trying to kill him to stop his plans).
* Hero-Killer: Literally, in fact.
* Love Makes You Evil
* Mad Scientist: A magical variation.
* The Man Behind the Man: He was this for Ephidel at first, with only passing references and hinting at first (see Early-Bird Cameo), before the story slowly unveiled his motives, culminating in his first actual appearance at the Dragon's Gate.
* Motive Decay: Strongly implied to have happened to him at some point throughout Eliwood's tale. The sidequests in Hector's story tell this particular tale.
* Obviously Evil: Well, duh. Although it's revealed that he wasn't always quite as evil as he looks.
* Ninian And Nils I Am Your Father: Never outright said, but heavily implied.
* Really Seven Hundred Years Old: Noted by Nils to be preventing the aging process with Quintessence, which hints at his abnormal lifespan fairly early. He's older than The Scouring itself, in fact, proven by his fathering Nils and Ninian some ten years or so before the war broke out.
* Athos noted that he and Nergal learned about Quintessence from the dragons at Arcadia, which raises the question of how Nergal prevented the aging process in the 500 years between the Scouring and his studies in Arcadia while still not being too evil to befriend Athos.
* Sanity Slippage -> Villainous Breakdown: Thanks to being consumed by the magic he researched (and forgetting his past over the centuries), his sanity has long been deteriorating. Especially evident in the final battle when his comments suggest Motive Decay and his death quote (whichever you get) shows he's completely lost it in the end.
* Start of Darkness: But you'll only see it in the sidequests.... Once, he was just a simple man who dabbled in the dark arts, but who loved his wife and children very much. When his wife Aenir, an ice dragon, was taken from him he tried to save her; leaving his children behind at Valor with the instruction to go through the Dragon's Gate if he didn't return in ten years. In order to re-open the Dragon's Gate to be with them, he began to delve even further into the darkness... only to lose himself in the process, forget why he wanted power and ultimately become a villain.
* Story-Breaker Power: Actually a plot point.
* Tragic Villain
* Well-Intentioned Extremist: Started as this, with the desire to find his wife keeping him alive for years. By the time he met Athos, he seemed to have forgetten much of his purpose (or else Athos was keeping quiet), and the Dark Magic he researched without regard to the dangers drove him over the edge.
