King Danaus who was the twin brother of King Aegyptus. Danaus had fifty daughters (known collectively as the Danaids) from various women and Aegyptus had fifty sons. There was an arranged mass marriage where the daughters of Danaus and the sons of Aegyptus wed one another. Danaus however had given each of his daughters knives and instructed them to kill their respective spouses that night. Fourty-nine of the daughters did so, Hypermnestra however refused because her husband, Lynkeus, honored her wish to remain a virgin.
