The British did not think there was only a single purpose for the American colonies. There were multiple reasons to establish colonies, including the opportunity to exploit the natural resources, the opportunity to create trading partners, to have a location to transport criminals (American actually received more prisoners than did Australia) and to prevent acquisition of the territory by Britain's enemies.
