It was given the nickname "Fred" by a colleague who likened its real name to a phrase of music by Frédéric Chopin. Despite the Glaeziver reputation for formality and stand-offishness, after a formal introduction, Fred was remarkably casual in further interactions. Fred was working in the Grissom's main laboratory in 2285 when Saavik first came aboard. It was pleased with Saavik's attempt at pronouncing its real name and considered her well mannered for a non-Glaeziver, or "opaque being". Fred died along with the rest of the crew when the Grissom was destroyed by the IKS B'rel in orbit of the Genesis Planet later that year. (TOS novelization: The Search for Spock) Fred was never explicitly mentioned to be a member of Starfleet.
