The brother of Jedi Master Lar Le'Ung Atu Ris'Ung was a Pau'an male born on Utapau. Growing up he aqquired an education and became what qualifies as an intern among the Pau'an, working for the advisory councils who assisted the Chairman of Utapau. In what can be described as his adolescents he was found to be force-sensitive by Master Marnica Berlo who took him as her Padawan. He went on to complete his training and became a Jedi Knight under Luke Skywalker's New Jedi Order just prior to the Yuuzhan Vong War. Atu survived the war but would enter a self-imposed exile upon realizing how much hatred he felt towards the Yuuzhan Vong for murdering his elder brother Lar. Despite his departure from the Order he maintained regular contact with Jedi, particularly the Skywalker family. During the Second Galactic Civil War, Atu repetitively contacted Jacen Solo who had embraced the dark side and became Darth Caedus with alternatives to violence, going so far as to beg the Dark Lord to halt his crusade of violence. However ravaged and consumed by his own paranoia Jacen perceived Atu's good intention as something devious and threated to murder the former-Jedi should he contact him again. When the news of Jacen's death came Atu was devastated, even more so when he learned it was his own twin that had dealt the killing blow. Having seen the two twins grow up before his own eyes Atu became obsessed with the Jedi's fall to darkness and began traveling the galaxy to every place Jacen was once thought to have visited before the Pau'an vanished entirely. He would later return to the galaxy in 120 ABY as a wealthy businessman and supporter of the Galactic Alliance. But in truth he was the Sith Lord, Darth Obserer who was bent at seeing the destruction of the One Sith and the restoration of the Rule of Two. During the Sith-Imperial War he covertly supported the Fel Empire's efforts in crippling the Galactic Alliance while hindering Nei Rin's search on who sabotaged the Ossus Project. In 130 ABY the Jedi Order became fractured, the remaining Jedi scattering the all corners of the galaxy. A few Jedi knowing of Atu's past history as a Knight fled to Utapau for his assistance, only to be cut down or captured by the Pau'an Sith. When Darth Krayt assumed the mantle of Emperor on Coruscant Oberer dawning the name of Atu Ris'Ung once again began supporting the Empire-in-exle through various humanoid intermediaries.
