She was born as Minnie Bell Smith in Brownsville, Haywood, Tennessee as the daughter of Hardin and Bessie Smith. She married Cassius Ward on 14 December 1911 and thereafter moved to Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts where they raised five children. She was widowed in 1937. Minnie Ward died in Boston, Massachusetts on 2 December 1999, aged 114 years and 13 days.
