Beaufort, South Carolina was a stop over for Confederate troops evacuated from Savannah in the last days of the Second Great War. From Beaufort, the Confederate soldiers (Jorge Rodriguez's platoon among them) were transferred by train through North Carolina and into Virginia to fight the advancing United States Army. By 1944, Beaufort had cleaned out all of its Negroes. The soldiers and sailors were chagrined at having to do their own manual labor.
