Synopsis
  • Driving away from their last adventure, Dmitri Mishkin crashes the car and Andrew Bennett rescues them. Deborah Dancer demands to know what he's brooding about since they learned his mother was a vampire. Dmitri tells them the story of his childhood. As a young boy in Russia, his abusive alcoholic father Ivan beat his mother Dunya Mishkin. One night they let a stranger into their home, and she turned out to be Mary, Queen of Blood. Mary killed his father and turned his mother into a vampire, taking her away and leaving the boy an orphan. Andrew Bennett visited him as a child and took him in, training him to be a vampire hunter from an early age. Mishkin has sworn to spend his life hunting down monsters, as he cannot be free until his mother's soul is free.

quotation
  • Have you not wondered, Deborah -- just why a man of my age spends his dotage in battle with sub-human things? Have you not wondered what horrors lurk beneath the surface of Dmitri Mishkin?
