Izanagi is a jutsu based on Hagoromo's Creation of All Things technique. What it does is cast a "genjutsu on oneself". By using the image creation of Yin Release with the life breathing forces of Yang Release, a person can effectively make some things illusions while some things real. Traditionally, it is used to cheat death. A Sharingan-user will be killed with an attack, but their body will turn into an illusion, and an illusion is produced and becomes real.

Izanami was used to counter this jutsu, and to "teach" those who used it. Izanami creates endless loop of genjutsu by establishing a loop of experiences, making Izanagi pointless. For example, Itachi used it to trap Kabuto in genjutsu by duplicating his moves twice in between an interval of their fight. This jutsu is primarily used to "teach" those who try to "cheat fate". It teaches those who cannot accept their true self that they can chose different paths. Hence why the jutsu can work even on those who haven't used Izanagi, like Kabuto. However, the jutsu is next to useless against those who are already fully accepting of their true selves. Both jutsu a very complex, but both sacrifice use of the Sharingan after its use. The Izanagi will consume a Sharingan in a given time frame, while the Izanami consumes the Sharingan after the loop is established. Should a user want to use Izanagi longer, they will either need to increase their activation time using Hashirama's cells, or use more Sharingan.
