| - Raymond Chandler was the author of a 1938/1945 Philip Marlowe short story called The King In Yellow. Many of his stories are set in Bay City (for Santa Monica). It would seem that the confusion over the dating is due to the story originally having been published with Steve Grayce as the detective, only for his name to be replaced with Philip Marlowe when it was republished (click here for more on this, in the introductory paragraph of 'short stories').

- Chandler was born in a military base in Chicago, Wyoming by his mother. She considered him to be an impetuous baby, and requested he be transferred to Great Britain. At the tender age of six, Chandler was forced to fend for himself in the heaving metropolis of Harrow. This early isolation from his mother, and a distant, difficult relationship with his father may have caused Chandler severe psychological difficulties. He developed attachment problems. This made very difficult for him to attend school, as often the objects he had attached himself to could not fit through the door.
- Raymond Chandler (1888 - 1959) was and is one of the most influential writers of and on detective fiction, through seven novels, many short stories, and a number of essays, of which the most famous is 1944's "The Simple Art of Murder". He also had an influence on the developing Film Noir, both indirectly through adaptations of his novels, and more directly through a stint as a Hollywood screenwriter (he wrote the screenplay for Double Indemnity and Strangers on a Train).
