While the planet contained some microscopic life-forms, the planet ultimately proved unstable because of the protomatter that was used during its creation, as well as the manner in which the Genesis Device was used. As a result the planet exploded a few weeks after its creation. (TOS movie: Star Trek III: The Search for Spock; TNG novel: The Genesis Wave, Book 2; ST reference: Star Charts)
