Yuletide was begun in 2003 by astolat and tzikeh, and is currently moderated by astolat and elynross. Stories were originally archived on Yuletide's own website, , and are now archived on Archive of Our Own (AO3) at . Each participant signs up in advance, choosing (from a very large list of options) the fandoms s/he's willing to write and the fandoms s/he would be most happy to receive. After signups, assignments go out. Each participant must write one 1,000-word (minimum) story, and each receives one 1,000-word (minimum) story in return. All stories are due by mid-December. On December 25, the stories go live with no author names attached; on January 1, the author names go live. There are two associated collections. On Christmas Eve, all unfilled prompts are made available to participants so that they may, if they wish, write extra last-minute gifts, usually under the 1K minimum. These are posted to Yuletide Madness, which is typically revealed a day after the main collection, giving participants a little more writing time. Participants who write additional gifts over the course of the following year post them to the New Year's Resolution collection.
