The Universal Ship Identification system (USI) was created by Ageira Technologies in partnership with Interspace Commerce. It is installed in Jump Gates and Trade Lanes so the companies can see what cargo the passing ships are holding, allowing for proper tariffs to be levied and shipments to be tracked. The Lane Hackers, a criminal organisation of former Ageira employees, are famously using the USI to gather information about valuable cargo being transported.
