In a later interview, Michael Okuda revealed that "Ed [Miarecki] made us two nearly-identical Melbourne models. I destroyed one of them to create a battle-damaged ship for BOBW2. Rick Sternbach helped with the battle damage, too. And Greg Jein contributed quite a bit of wreckage as well. The other Nebula model ended up on one of the side tables in Sisko's office in DS9. I think it was labeled "Melbourne", too." [2] [3] This second Nebula-class USS Melbourne model was seen as a desktop display model in The Next Generation episodes "Future Imperfect" and "The Wounded" . It later re-appeared as a desktop display model in several Deep Space Nine episodes, most prominently in "The Way of the Warrior" and "'Til Death Do Us Part" .

  • The USS Melbourne (Nebula class) was a Nebula-class Federation starship in service during the mid-24th century. Starfleet offered William Riker command of the Melbourne in 2366. Even though Jean-Luc Picard described the Melbourne as "a fine ship", Riker declined the promotion to remain aboard the USS Enterprise-D. (TNG: "The Best of Both Worlds") This ship, along with the Excelsior-class USS Melbourne, joined the Federation task force taking a stand against the Borg cube at the Battle of Wolf 359. Both Melbourne ships, along with 37 other ships, were destroyed. (TNG: "The Best of Both Worlds, Part II"; DS9: "Emissary") Commander Shelby recognized the Melbourne's wreckage when the Enterprise-D arrived a few hours after the battle. (TNG: "The Best of Both Worlds, Part II") In a holo-simulation of the Enterprise-D's ready room, the dedication model of the Melbourne could be seen. (TNG: "Future Imperfect") The Excelsior-class Melbourne was kept in service as the former ship's decommissionning was delayed until after the Battle of Wolf 359, at which point both Melbournes were destroyed. (Star Trek: False Vacuum: "Pothole Omnium")

Commander William T. Riker of the USS Enterprise-D was offered the command of the Melbourne, but he turned it down to remain as first officer on board the Enterprise. When the Borg invaded the Federation in 2366/2367, Halloway rushed to complete construction on the Melbourne and took it into battle against the Borg at the Battle of Wolf 359 where it fought alongside its predecessor. Both the old and new Melbournes were destroyed, with all hands lost. (TNG short story: "Trust Yourself When All Men Doubt You", TNG episodes: "The Best of Both Worlds, Parts I & II", DS9 episode: "Emissary")
