  • In Tselinoyarsk, 1964, the attack teams of both KGB and the Spetsnaz were equipped with ballistic shields. Rectangular in shape and possessing a thin eye slot hole for vision, they provided ballistic protection during approaches towards potentially armed individuals. In 1970, former Red Army soldiers utilized the same shield design during the San Hieronymo Incident, along with their FOX allies. Rebel forces under Naked Snake's command also stole some of these shields for their own use, from a local research lab.

  • A Ballistic shield is a Terran hand-held protective device. Issued to both military and law enforcement, it serves to defend users from small to medium caliber projectiles. Though not as effective against Zerg and Protoss weapons, many law enforcement groups still used it for lower cost and availability compared to military grade equipment. If enemies get too close to use ranged weapons, the Ballistic shield can still be used to bash and stun them enough to get back into range.

The coating does have limits and once it wears down the shield becomes vulnerable to fewer hits.
