Botwoon was a mini-boss enemy in the classic Metroid title Super Metroid for the SNES. It is a large dragon like creature who waited in a tunnel for its opponent, Samus Aran to come. The only weak spot of Botwoon was its head, which Samus Aran would easily be able to shoot at with her weapons. When defeated, Samus would obtain no new items or weapons, though she was then able to progress through her adventure to get to the main Maridia boss Draygon.

  • Botwoon (ボツーン botsūn) is a minor boss encountered in Super Metroid, an aquatic serpent that resides in Maridia. When Samus encounters it, it will swim around the room, entering and exiting four holes in the wall. It will sometimes poke its head out of a hole and spit green spores in a buckshot-like spray; these spores can be destroyed for pickups. Apart from this, its only means of attack is colliding with Samus as it passes between holes.
  • A Botwoon was a large, aquatic serpentine predator indigenous to the planet Zebes. Their size appears to indicate that they are apex predators in the Maridia zones in which they live. They make their lairs in multiple connecting holes, presumably dug out by them. They are capable of spitting a number of green objects of unknown origin in a spreadshot pattern; also, their bodies are apparently flexible enough to dodge any attack, forcing the only useful weak point to be their head, however they are immune to beam weaponry. As they are injured, blood rushes to the surface of their skin, turning their skin deeper reddish tints as damage continues to be incurred. Botwoons are also notable for swimming by using a body-length undulating fin and a horizontal caudal fin.

Botwoons are also notable for swimming by using a body-length undulating fin and a horizontal caudal fin. Only one Botwoon was ever encountered by Samus Aran, and so it can be speculated that they were either rather uncommon or rare, or simply that they had very wide territories (which would seem unlikely since they did not appear to have any ability to move to other locations). This single Botwoon had been trapped in a room by the Space Pirates, although whether this was to block off its attack towards them or if it was purposefully placed here by the Pirates as a sort of "guard" is unknown. As with all other species native to Zebes, it became extinct in the wild when Samus Aran finally destroyed the evil Mother Brain. Botwoon is somewhat similar in appearance to another aquatic predator called Serris.

Apart from this, its only means of attack is colliding with Samus as it passes between holes. To defeat Botwoon, Samus must fire Missiles, Super Missiles, or Charge Beam shots at its head; the rest of its body is invulnerable. As it incurs damage, its red color scheme will become more intense, and it will speed up, making it harder to hit and avoid. Once Botwoon has been defeated, it will stop slithering around, and chunks of its body will rapidly fall to the floor and explode. Botwoon's death opens up the right wall so that Samus can continue exploring Maridia.
