John Wells, born May 28, 1956 in Alexandria, Virginia, U.S., is a motion picture writer, producer and director. He is an Executive Producer for ER. He was the series head writer and showrunner for the early seasons. He remained a writer, director and a senior producer throughout the series run. He is also the Executive Producer of the series Third Watch, The West Wing, Southland and Shameless. His company, John Wells Productions, is currently based at Warner Bros. studios in Burbank, California. Wells is also a labor leader, and was elected president of the Writers Guild of America, West in 2009, after serving a prior term in that office from 1999–2001.
