The NUP was founded in 1930 during the General Strike, when Radical Prime Minister Rhys Lawgoch was unable to gather support from his party to pass an anti-union bill - as a result Lawgoch and other right-wing Radicals merged with the Agrarian League to form the NUP. The NUP currently have a plurality in the House of Councillors, governing in a coalition government with the Radical Party. Its current leader, Diane Hall, serves as the current Prime Minister of Rainier.
