The Old Thrush was an ancient Bird, one of the last descendants of the Thrushes of Dale, familiars of the old Dale-Men who had learnt to understand the throssel-tongue. The Old Thrush alarmed Bard Bowman that Smaug the dragon was to attack lake-town and hinted him at the missing dragon-scale where Bard's ancestor Girion of Dale I had failed to kill the dragon, but made the creature vulnerable to the deadly shot with the black Arrow.
