Ringol was the name of a great tower upon which the mighty lamp Ormal sat. It was raised by the Valar to house the Southern of the Two Lamps, Ormal. It was placed in the south of Middle-earth, and together with the northern lamp Illuin lit up all of Arda. Ringol was destroyed by Melkor, and collapsed. This ruined a great part of Middle-earth, and waters most likely from the eastern ocean flowed in to fill the void. Later here was formed the inland Sea of Ringol.[citation needed]
