  • A darkhound is a dog that has been infused with the same dark power as the Black Court Vampires.
  • Darkhounds are Shadowspawn in the form of large black dogs, the size of ponies. They are said to run with the Wild Hunt. They do not leave footprints in any material except stone. It is said to be particularly dangerous to meet them at crossroads, or at twilight. (Cf. Crossroads of Twilight (novel).) Crossing running water is supposed to be the only way to evade them short of killing them. They are usually found in packs of ten to twelve.
  • A darkhound is a "species" of Shadowspawn. Darkhounds look like very large dogs or wolves and are about the size of a small horse, weighing from 250 - 300 pounds. They are used by the Shadow to hunt down targets. Their saliva and blood are both poisonous and corrosive, causing bruising and burns. If even a tiny amount of either touches the skin, the victim will die "slowly and in great pain...", and larger amounts will kill a human almost instantly. A bite from a Darkhound is almost invariably lethal. They make no mark on soft ground, but leave prints in stone, and are frequently accompanied by the smell of burned sulfur.
  • Darkhounds are a species of demonic dog found in the Tirisfal Glades, Eastern Plaguelands, and Blackrock Depths. The dwarves of the Blackrock Depths use a variety of darkhound called a bloodhound that easily sniffs out intruders hiding in stealth. Darkhounds often drop wolf meat when killed. Types of darkhounds: * Darkhounds * Plaguehounds (Eastern Plaguelands) * Blighthounds (Eastern Plaguelands) * Bloodhounds (Blackrock Depths) * Deathshadow Hounds (Nagrand)

It is said to be particularly dangerous to meet them at crossroads, or at twilight. (Cf. Crossroads of Twilight (novel).) Crossing running water is supposed to be the only way to evade them short of killing them. They are usually found in packs of ten to twelve. After being slain, they dissolve into shadow and reform their body, though they can be slain by balefire. Their blood and saliva is extremely poisonous. Even small quantities can kill, albeit slowly, and larger quantities can kill too quickly to be Healed. Their claws are sharp enough to dig through bronze.

A bite from a Darkhound is almost invariably lethal. They make no mark on soft ground, but leave prints in stone, and are frequently accompanied by the smell of burned sulfur. Balefire is one of the few things known to reliably destroy any Darkhound. Though some can be killed with normal weapons, there exists a superior breed of Darkhounds that require balefire to kill permanently and cannot be effectively harmed by other means. If they are damaged by anything that does not completely destroy them, they will simply regenerate. These Darkhounds (or at least a subspecies Rand al'Thor fights at Rhuidean) are seemingly solid but if they are chopped into bits the pieces will liquefy, pool, and reform into the Darkhound once again. Lan claims it is impossible to outrun them once they have your scent. However, he adds that they don't like rain, and "a good thunderstorm can stop them completely." Running water will also halt them in their tracks. "They will not usually venture out into the rain, but once running rain fails to stop them". Darkhounds typically run in packs of ten to twelve, though a pack may be as large as fifty hounds (such as the one encountered by Perrin on the morning he scouts So Habor). Perrin Aybara and Moiraine Damodred fought Darkhounds outside of Illian, and killed one with several arrows to the face. During the Last Battle, Power-wrought weapons are demonstrated as very effective against the Darkhounds.

The dwarves of the Blackrock Depths use a variety of darkhound called a bloodhound that easily sniffs out intruders hiding in stealth. Darkhounds are demonic dogs. This creature resembles a purple hunting hound with a shaggy black mane and a horrible set of fangs. Two horns sprout out of its forehead, and another pair emerges from its shoulders. These creatures frequent forests, traveling either by themselves or in small packs, hunting and killing any living creature as they find it. Unlike normal dogs, darkhounds kill for sheer joy of the kill; they rarely eat what they hunt. No one really knows where darkhounds came from. They appeared shortly after the Third War, terrorizing the wildlife of the former elven kingdoms. While the Forsaken hunting and living in Tirisfal Glades consider them only a minor nuisance, occasionally a large enough pack poses a threat to alchemists exploring the woods for components. Many warlocks instead keep the monsters as pets, training them to be even more lethal than normal. Darkhounds understand basic Eredun, but, being little better than beasts they cannot speak. Darkhounds stalk their prey, shadowing it for hours until a suitable ambush spot presents itself. They then dart out, attempting to bring down their victim with overwhelming numbers and sharp teeth. (MG 25) Darkhounds often drop wolf meat when killed.
