He explained a lot of the procedure to the Avatar, including which things to keep in mind. He then offered himself for the first transfer to set an example. He told the Avatar to seek another way, before he died horribly from the plague.

However, after first things seemed to have gone right, he became deathly sick. He then realized in horror that, while the plague had vanished from the air, it had moved into the soil of Mars, making the growth of their plant bodies totally impossible. He told the Avatar to seek another way, before he died horribly from the plague.
