Starting 36th in the forty-car field, Fox completed 352 of the 492 laps before falling out with engine issues. He finished 25th as a result. After the dismal effort, Fox re-evaluated his priorities and focused on winning the Pacific Coast championship for the Winston Racing Series, the premier short-track circuit at the time. The decision paid off, with Fox winning the regional title and finishing runner-up nationally by 1987. He was also the runner-up in the second season of Northwest Series competition in 1986, winning 7 times and grabbing 45 top-tens in that series.
