Briseus, in Greek mythology, was the father of Briseis. Briseis was taken captive by Achilles, but was taken by Agamemnon for his own, when the latter had to return Chryseis to her father Chryses, to end a plague sent by Apollo. Briseus hanged himself when he lost his daughter. Later writers describe Chryses as the brother of Briseus, making Chryseis and Briseis cousins.
