The American Bank Center is a renovated and expanded version of the city's old Bayfront Convention Center. The renovation was completed in early 2005. The arena was known as the Bayfront Plaza from 1967 to 1964. The arena was previously home to the Corpus Christi IceRays ice hockey professional team. It is now home to the Corpus Christi IceRays junior team of the North American Hockey League and the Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Islanders men's and women's basketball teams. Starting in spring of 2010, became home to the Corpus Christi Hammerheads indoor football team, which the ABC hosted from 2005-2006 until the Corpus Christi Sharks started their three-year run. The American Bank Center arena seats 8,156 for basketball, arena football or hockey and seats 10,000 people for concerts and religious gatherings. The American Bank Center is located in Corpus Christi's Bayfront Arts and Science Park.

The in-house catering company is Centerplate, a company that offers special event consulting and custom catering for food and beverage requirements. In 2007 the arena was the site for a controversial event in the WWE, As the same day as the scheduled show, superstar Chris Benoit died. The show was canceled and fans received a full refund for their tickets, a definite rare occurrence for the company.
