The Sōya was initially a gifted ship that had two other uncompleted ships in class. The Sōya or Chiryō Maru as it was initially renamed by the Japanese was launched in February of 1938 and commissioned by Japan for military service in 1939. The Sōya had managed to survive the war and was later refitted to become an Antarctic research vessel. The Sōya was able to perform this role because its Soviet designers had built it with ice breaking capabilities.
