Fire, 'Brother and Husband Life-Giver', was a spirit-god of the Elan, whose gifts were light, warmth and protection. The corresponding feminine spirit-god was known as Water, 'Sister and Wife Life-Giver'. When a member of the Elan died, these two spirit-gods, Fire...Life-Giver and Water...Life-Giver, were ritually conjoined and became 'Life-Taker'--whose purpose it was to weigh the merits of the dead and to decide on the fate of the dead Elan's soul.
