She worked at night so that she could attend classes at California State University (probably Northridege). She wanted to become a reporter. She and her son lived with her sister at this time. On 9 February 1998, Torres followed her usual routine and stopped at Sherman Market on the way home from work where she was shot to death by an unknown assailant. She was 26 years of age at the time of her death. She was an organ donor, and her organs were subsequently transplanted: * her liver went to J. B. Dickey * her corneas went to Christine Foye * her heart went to Terry McCaleb * one of her kidneys went to Tammy Domike * one of her kidneys went to William Farley In April of 1998, McCaleb was contacted by Torres' sister Graciela, who asked McCaleb to take up the investigation into Gloria's murder. McCaleb later learned that Torres had been targeted because her blood group was the rare AB with CMV negative, the same as McCaleb's.
