abstract
| - The 1944 Wisconsin Badgers football team represented the University of Wisconsin–Madison in the 1944 college football season. This was the first season since 1905 (39 years) that the Badgers started the season away from Camp Randall Stadium (known as "Randall Field" prior to the construction of the stadium). With a war-depleted roster, freshman Allan Schafer was named the starting quarterback. Shafer died as a result of injuries sustained in the game versus Iowa. He was seventeen years old. His jersey number (#83) was retired and his name appears on the Camp Randall Stadium façade. The "Living Memorial" scholarship at the University of Wisconsin is awarded in his honor.
