- Combat Shields are melee weapons in Xenoblade Chronicles X. They are Shields. They are automatically equipped when a Shield-using class does not have an equipped melee weapon. They cannot have augment slots added to them, and are not included in the player's inventory.
- During the Great Crusade era, Combat Shields were wrist-mounted shields or bucklers containing a small defensive energy field generator which enabled it to withstand great amounts of damage, while Boarding Shields were larger, bulkier versions of the same. These were favoured by assault units employed by Legion Breacher Siege Squads for the additional protection they offered in the confined close quarter fighting of starship boarding actions and siege attacks. Although these shields' smaller size and weaker defensive field meant they offered nothing like the protection offered by the prototype Legiones Astartes Storm Shields that were beginning to enter service at the time of the Horus Heresy, they remained a valued part of a Legion's armoury.
- The Combat Shield can be used in combination with any single handed weapon. Lowered, it offers the user minimal protection. When raised, it will protect the user's head area. It protects mostly against small arms fire from pistols or sub-machine guns. It is made of bullet proof glass that retracts into folds when not in use. The shield was used by the guards aboard the Trinity Research Platform, as well as dataDyne forces in Africa and Peru. The Combat Shield is not used in multiplayer.
