Melmacians are the main species that inhabit the planet. Most food on the planet involves cats such as a chili cat etc. When Alf lives with the Tanners they have family rules one being Do not eat members of the family or any family.

Al-Kassah reacted to the archaeologist's initial low offer of ten dollars with the same tone as if having learned he was alien from Melmac abandoned on Earth as a baby.

It was recently destroyed by an apocalyptic nuclear war, rendering all life extinct, except for a small few Melmacian survivors. Whether the planet still exists (albeit uninhabitable) or if it was completely destroyed is not known.
