The Basque National Party (Basque: Euzko Alderdi Jeltzalea; Span: Partido Nacional Vasco; French: Parti National Basque), or EAJ, is a Christian Democratic, center-right political party active in the Basque Republic. Since independence in 1946, the EAJ has been the dominant political party in the Republic, with brief interruptions in the 1980s and mid-2000s. Traditionally, their political rivals have been the center-left Basque Solidarity (EE) and the hard-left Basque Socialist Party (ASE). The EAJ currently holds a minority government in the Basque Parliament and holds the Presidency (Lehendakari) with Mr. Iñigo Urkullu, who has been President since October of 2011.
