abstract
| - Over the past three hundred years France was and still is a major power with strong cultural, economic, political and military influence. During the 17th and 18th Centuries, France had major colonial possessions in North America, all but a few small islands in the Caribbean now independent or a part of independent nations. The current French government is under the jurisdiction of the House of Orleans, whom gained power under the rule of King Louis-Philippe following the July Revolution of 1830. The regime, largely liberal in the early run, has become extremely conservative in its later years following the réconciliation period.
