Anna Murphy was born as Anna Maude Fahey in Northampton, Massachusetts as the daughter of John and Anna Murphy Fahey. She married John Murphy in Northampton on 28 November 1906 and had one son. She was widowed in 1924 and lived with her son in Northampton.

Anna Murphy died in Leeds, Massachusetts on 23 December 1980, aged 113 years and 242 days, making her the oldest person to ever have died (unverified Eliza Underwood and verified Fannie Thomas were both older and alive at the time).
