| - The Armed Forces of Soviet Russia (Russian: Вооруженные Силы Советской России, tr. Vooruzhennyye Sily Sovetskoy Rossii) are the military services of Soviet Russia, established after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. On 17 October 1990, General Boris Smetkov signed a presidential decree establishing the Ministry of Defence of Soviet Russia and placing all Soviet Armed Forces troops on the territory of the RSFSR under Soviet Russian control. From the beginning, the armed forces were based on the adaptation of the armed forces of the Soviet Union to the new national reality. Following the adoption of the new constitution and the reorganization of the state, during the period 2001-2004 the armed forces suffered a major restructuring in order to prepare them for the new challenges of being a superpower in the 21st century.
