Debre Werq literally ("Mount of Gold") is a Nea Abyssinian monastery. The monastery is located in Gojjam Province on top of a hill in the town of the same name. The monastery is often referred to as Debre Werq Maryam and is dedicated to the Archangel Michael. The monastery was founded by Abbot Sarsa Petros, who was himself a disciple of Abbot Tekle Maryam of Martula Maryam and a contemporary of Emperor Baeda Maryam I (r.1399-1409). The monastery was destroyed in the 15th century during the invasions of Gragn, but was rebuilt by Emperor Gelawdewos (r. 1471-1490). In the 16th and 17th centuries, various emperors visited the monastery including Susenyos I (r. 1537-1563) and Iyasu I (1613-1637).
