The Union for the Public Domain (UPD) was started in 1996 as a non-profit citizens group. The stated mission of the UPD is to protect and enhance the public domain in matters concerning intellectual property. The UPD is a membership organization, attempting to act as an independent voice on intellectual property issues. Notable members of the UPD Board include Richard Stallman founder of the GNU project and Michael Davis, a Senior Fellow at the Center for the Study of Ethics in the Professions at Illinois Institute of Technology.
