Horsetail bamboo is a species of fern bamboo native to China and Japan. It is named because instead of having fern-like leaves on top as most fern bamboos have, it has horsetail-like leaves on top. It can grow to about 4-5 feet tall and can have a stem about 5-6 inches in diameter, making it the smallest fern bamboo in the world. It is found mainly in swamps, forests, and grasslands, but can survive in human settlements if conditions are right.
