| - Ryan: “Ready to finally challenge the Cyllage Gym buddy?” Chespin: “Ches! Chespin!” Ryan: “Let’s go!” Ryan: “I’m here to challenge you to a battle!” Chespin: “Chespin!” Grant: “I’m Grant, the Gym Leader. I guess you want a battle?” Ryan: “Yup!” Grant: “Nice. Now you have two options. You can climb this wall to the battlefield, or take the elevator. Your choice. I’ll see you up here either way.” Ryan: “Just so you know, the only reason I didn’t climb the wall was the fact I’m slightly afraid of heights. Otherwise I’d-” Grant: “Whichever way you wanted to get here, is your choice alone. Now, I will use two Pokemon, while you have access to all of yours.” Ryan: “Can I see which you’re using? It’ll help me strategise.” Grant: “Nope. You do have access to all your Pokemon, and you are allowed to substitute, so if you need to switch strategies, you can.” Ryan: “Alright then. One more thing. This may sound stupid, and I won’t blame you if you think it does, but am I also allowed two Pokemon at once?” Grant: “No, you can only use one at a time, otherwise you are disqualified from the match. You need to follow the rules to become a great trainer.” Ryan: “Thank you for the clarification. I do want to follow the rules, it’s just that I didn’t want to end up breaking one by mistake.” Ryan: “Right then Grant, let’s go!” Grant: “A Froakie. This will be an interesting battle. Onix, let’s go!” Grant sends out Onix. Ryan and Froakie both gasp and recoil at how big Onix is. Ryan (Thinking): “Okay, might’ve been a bad move to start with someone as small as Froakie.” Grant: “Start with Flash Cannon!” Ryan: “Water Pledge!” Ryan: “Are you okay Froakie?” Grant: “Rock Polish!” Grant: “Now, Iron Tail!” Onix uses Iron Tail, extremely fast, faster than it usually would be. Ryan: “Froakie, jump up high and use Pound!” Ryan: “It might not be possible, but use your Frubbles to stick Onix down!” Grant: “I see. Use Rock Tomb!” Ryan: “Use your jumping to climb the rocks and Pound Onix in the face!” Grant: “Now, Flash Cannon!” Ryan: “Froakie!” Ryan: “Okay, Leech Seed!” Grant: “Interesting strategy. Now, Rock Tomb!” Ryan: “Quick, Confuse Ray before Onix can perform the attack!” Grant: “Now, Iron Tail!” Ryan: “Are you okay Pumpkaboo?” Ryan: “Okay, another Leech Seed, this time on Onix’s tail so it can’t use Iron Tail!” Grant: “You can stop the use of Onix’s tail, but there are other ways to attack. Use Rock Tomb!” Ryan: “Chespin, you’re up.” Chespin: “Chespin!” Ryan: “Vine Whip!” Grant: “Thanks Onix, you done very well.” Tyrunt: “Tyrunt!” Ryan: “Don’t let Tyrunt intimidate you Chespin!” Ryan: “Tackle!” Grant: “Use Crunch!” Ryan: “Alright Chespin, good thinking!” Grant: “Dragon Tail!” Ryan: “Use your vines to toss Tyrunt into the air!” Chespin (Wincing): “Chee….” Ryan: “Are you okay Tyrunt?” Grant: “Draco Meteor!” Scatterbug: “Scat!” Ryan: “String Shot!” Grant: “Dragon Tail!” Ryan: “Tackle!” Grant: “Dragon Tail!” Grant: “Rock Tomb!” Grant: “Use, Crunch!” Ryan: “NO!” Ryan: “That was everybody! Well, nearly. I’d bring Pumpkaboo out again, but It’d ultimately be pointless. I’m sad I lost and all, but I’ve got to give credit where credit is due. Tyrunt, you and Grant make a great team. And don’t think you’ve heard the last of me. I just need to train everybody, then they’ll evolve, and then I can beat you...maybe.” Grant: “Maybe. I’ll be here waiting.” Ryan: “They’re ready now?” Wigglytuff: “Tuff.” Ryan: “Wow. Two losses in a row. Ah well, that just means I have to work harder and smarter! Ready to head out Chespin?” Chespin: “Pin!” Ryan: “Hey, Chespin?” Chespin: “Ches?” Ryan: You know how Nate mentioned his brother Jon?” Chespin: “Ches, Ches?” Ryan: “I want to find him. Challenge him.” Chespin: “Chespin!” Ryan: “Then that’s our new mission!” Narrator: Ryan arrived in Cyllage City and went ahead to battle Grant. Even though Ryan could use more Pokemon, he couldn’t win. Learning from his encounter with Anthony on Route 4, he reacts much more calmly. Now, with a trainer named Jon on his mind, he sets off for Shalour City.
