For some time in 1999, the ATF had been tracking a cult led by Seth Fargough, because they were heavily armed and fortified in their base north of Seattle, Washington. They clashed with SG-1 investigating the Cult of Setesh. The ATF were technically in charge of the operation, until the President of the United States contacted the agent in charge of the operation, James Hamner, giving SG-1 the authority. (SG1: "Seth")
- Agents Dean and O'Hara worked for ATF, and were following members of the Zealot cult prior to the Sky Mount Round Table conference. However they, along with all of the Zealots, went missing.

Its responsibilities include the investigation and prevention of federal offenses involving the unlawful use, manufacture, and possession of firearms and explosives, acts of arson and bombings, and illegal trafficking of alcohol and tobacco products. The ATF also regulates via licensing the sale, possession, and transportation of firearms, ammunition, and explosives in interstate commerce. In 1958, ATF agents took part in an operation that uncovered an important Mafia summit in upstate New York, which was attended by mob bosses like Paul Fortunato, Rico Tattaglia, Ignazio Pignatelli, Joseph Zaluchi, Salvatore Drago and many others. As a direct result of this operation, the general public became aware of an organized crime syndicate and mobsters like Salvatore Narducci (who wasn't an official U.S. citizen) were deported to their native Sicily.
