Virtual water is the concept of considering the total quantity of water which was required for the manufacture or growing of a product, not just the visible amount. For example, the virtual water used in making cup of coffee, includes, besides the water used in brewing, the water used to grow the coffee and the water used to produce the fuel which heated or transported the water and coffee. Thus a nation which exports large quantities of grain is, in effect, exporting large quantities of water.

The originator of the concept of virtual water, John Anthony Allan, of King’s College London and the School of Oriental and African Studies was named the 2008 Stockholm Water Prize Laureate in Stockholm, March 19, 2008 by the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI).
