"To have been nominated by my GB team-mates makes it extra special to special to know and I am following in a great line of British Paralympians who have done this job. "I hope I can do the job with the same pride I have in all my races." After taking a bronze medal in the T46 400m in Sydney in 2000 he moved up to 800m and won European gold before repeating the feat in Athens. He has struggled this season with an Achilles problem but has said he will be on the start line for the first round on Sunday 14 September, 2008 - the final is the following day. Phil Lane, chef de mission for ParalympicsGB, said: "Danny Crates is a great ambassador for disability sport and for ParalympicsGB and a wonderful role model for any young athlete. "As a Paralympic, World and European champion he has proved himself to be a world-class athlete and fully deserves the honour of carrying the flag."
