The battery was mustered in at Fort Snelling, Minnesota between February 2 to May 1, 1863 from members of the 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th Minnesota Volunteer Infantry Regiments. The 3rd Minnesota Light Artillery Battery was mustered out at St. Paul, Minnesota on February 27, 1866.
