Robert Backus, Sr. was the father of Bob Backus, and an agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Backus was one of the agents who set up the Behavioral Science Services (now Behavioral Analysis Unit) and the Violent Criminal Apprehension Program (VICAP). He was a punitive and unforgiving father who often beat his son for bed wetting and other minor misbehavior.
