The pilum is a heavy Javelin generally about two meters long total, consisting of an iron shank about 7mm in diameter and a 60cm shaft with a pyramidal head. The shank is most often attached to the shaft with a tang, but a socket is also used. Some pila were weighted with lead balls to increase penetration. Their maximum range is 98ft, but they perform best from 49-66 ft. They are usually carried in pairs, and may occasionally be used in melee combat.
