In recent years, changes in energy policy along with innovations in clean coal technologies have prompted that the coal production in Kalmar Union has been growing exponentially. In the 80s of the last century, Norway was the only nation in the actual Kalmar Union that produced coal. This situation remains today, but production has increased from 3 to 26 million tons in a few years. Coal is used 93% for energy production and 7% for other industrial uses.
