Empress Mary, Queen of the Luthori (12 July 2519 – 1 August 2610) of the House of Orange was the first female Luthori head of state. She assumed the throne following the death of her father, William III, Prince of Orange and the restoration of the Holy Luthori Empire after the War of Luthori Succession. Mary married Philippe II, at the time Crown Prince of Alduria, after a genuine love affair when they met during his exile in the HLE, becoming Empress Consort on his accession to the Aldurian throne.

Mary married Philippe II, at the time Crown Prince of Alduria, after a genuine love affair when they met during his exile in the HLE, becoming Empress Consort on his accession to the Aldurian throne. Empress Mary died on 1 August 2610 at the age of 91. She had been the Queen of the Luthori for 44 years, presiding over the de-Stalinification of Luthor and the expansion of the Holy Empire's sphere of influence. But perhaps her most lasting influence was on the values of the time: the Restoration age became synonymous with prudish gentility and repression. When her husband Philippe died in 2600, Mary donned widow's mourning clothes and wore them for the rest of her life. This display had a profound effect on the nation's attitude to mourning - lavish funerals and strictly dictated mourning clothes and etiquette became the fashion until the end of the decade. At Mary's death there was a final outpouring of elaborate mourning - all adults wore black, black and purple banners were hung from shop windows, even iron fences were given a fresh coat of black paint. However, her son Emperor Philip I was a sensible man, and signalled the beginning of a new era by limiting the period of mourning for his mother to three months.
