| - The Republic of Hawaii, also known simply as Hawaii, is a constitutional presidential republic and island nation in the central Pacific Ocean. The Republic of Hawaii was formerly a United States territory, and home to the extensive United States Pacific Fleet, stationed in Pearl Harbor. The nation of Hawaii was declared on July 19, 1936 by former territorial governor Joesph Poindexter, who became president only a day after the Yellowstone Eruption. Before that Hawaii was a territory for 28 years, one week, and five days, but because of the eruption no longer saw any benefit in remaining a United States territory.
