The Horizon-class cruiser was a type of starship in Starfleet service during the late 22nd and early 23rd centuries. Similar in appearance to the Daedalus-class ships of the Earth Starfleet that were later integrated into the nascent United Federation of Planets Starfleet, the Horizon class was larger and more capable. (Star Trek: Avenger: "The Essential Process") It is unclear as to which Horizon — Daedalus-class or Horizon-class — was the ship that left the book Chicago Mobs of the Twenties on Sigma Iotia II. (TOS: "A Piece of the Action")

  • The Horizon-class was a type of early Earth/Federation exploration starship in service from 2150 to 2197*. Classified as a Cruiser, they were originally launched with laser-based weapons and defenses. At the commencement of open hostilities in the Earth-Romulan War, the weapons were upgraded in order to increase their combat performance. Following the war, they continued in service following the incorporation of the United Federation of Planets. * note: dates adjusted to canon format from Star Trek Spaceflight Chronology dates 2093-2140.

At the commencement of open hostilities in the Earth-Romulan War, the weapons were upgraded in order to increase their combat performance. Their Second Generation Warp Drive system was centered around an antimatter spiked fusion drive utilizing a ratio mix of 20:1 matter/antimatter for a maximum speed of warp 3.25 (34.2 C). The Horizon Class was one of the most important ships and classes in spaceflight history. The flagship for early United Federation of Planets space exploration, the USS Horizon journeyed to the edge of the galaxy, encountering many new worlds in its numerous voyages. At the end of its commissioned life, it was retired to Star Fleet's Spaceflight Museum on Memory Alpha.(TOS reference: Spaceflight Chronology) * note: dates adjusted to canon format from Star Trek Spaceflight Chronology dates 2093-2140.

(TOS: "A Piece of the Action") The spaceframe of the Horizon-class USS Gauss would be used to construct the Archon-class prototype. The Horizon-class USS Constellation was later rebuilt as a Constitution-class heavy cruiser, hence the low registration number in comparison with most other vessels of the Constitution class.
